′Finding the way is not a gift or an innate ability that one either has or does not have. It is a precondition for life itself. Knowing where I am, my location, is the precondition for knowing where I have to go, wherever it may be.′ – Otl Aicher
WAY FINDING SOLUTIONS
Wayfinding solutions and signage systems are relatively new concepts, which are as new as the subject itself. Equally new is the whole idea of systematic design that blends together the technical and functional requirements of the project, although the task of showing the way is as old as humankind itself.
Giving clear information, as quickly as possible, to very large crowds is a relatively modern concern - E.g. hospitals, airports, exhibitions, railway stations and terminals, to name a few. Visitors need to get to the right place, quickly and efficiently, and are often confronted with the bewildering choices of A, B, C etc. A clearly designed wayfinding system to guide them is indispensible.
Our Methodology:- Contract: Essential to the establishment of a good relationship between the client and designer, the contract details what is expected of the design firm.
- Gather Information: The architect will supply details, blacking out irrelevant information. Typically this consists of ground plans, cross sections and general views - the purpose being to provide the designer an intimate knowledge of the building and all its functions.
- Preliminary Design: A graphical view of the wayfinding system is provided which determines what information needs to be shown, what departments and names need to be displayed, the hierarchy of information and the flexibility of the system.
- Design: When both parties come to a consensus after the preliminary design,
- Design: When both parties come to a consensus after the preliminary design, the final design is laid out. It provides functional solutions and is accompanied by drawings, a statement of costs, quantity and schedule
- Work Plan & Prototypes: These are essential to test flexibility and installation constraints, and should blend aesthetically with the environment
- Manufacture and Roll-Out: This is when the actual sign is built, developed and shipped out to the client location
- Installation: It involves on-site supervision of the project to ensure that installation is trouble-free and does not cause any hindrance to the building
- Inspection: A checklist with missing items and deficiencies are noted and an agreement is reached on the date by which it will be rectified.
